A Complete Streets Policy is a commitment that all future transportation projects will take into account the needs of EVERYONE using the roads. The goal of Complete Streets is to provide new and improved travel experiences and mobility options for all people. This can improve public health through increased physical activity, cleaner air, safer travel ways, and places for social gatherings and leisure.
While the Long Branch Master Plan is supportive of Complete Streets, institutionalizing the policy remains a work in progress. This requires updating procedures, plans, and processes used in transportation decision-making and providing training and educational opportunities to staff and professionals so that they understand the Complete Streets approach.
Why is it Important?
The purpose of instituting Complete Streets is to ensure that municipalities advance policy into action. This action supports municipalities in instituting their Complete Streets Policy through a comprehensive program of planning and training. Incorporating multimodal accommodations into the routine planning, design, maintenance, and operations of the street network requires more than just understanding and agreeing with a two or three page policy that has been adopted by the governing body.
For successful implementation, Complete Streets should become part of the culture and operations of the jurisdiction – the plans, procedures, and regulations that direct and guide the actions of local agencies. This includes municipal master plan elements and zoning ordinances, design guidelines, and project development and delivery procedures.
