As an acupuncturist, I am beginning to see and hear about the negative effects this challenging year is having on not just my patients, but their families, friends and kids in the community. With COVID and the shorter and colder days of winter ahead, I fear people will further isolate and this will have a negative impact on the health and well-being of our community, particularly the youth. Additionally, many residents may be dealing with increased financial hardships that may be adding additional stress or affecting their ability to have a heated home or food on the table or seeking the help they need. While I know as a town we have access to public health services through Montclair, I think we need to do more to keep an eye on our neighbors with regularly promoted resources, outreach to our vulnerable populations and potentially adding free/low cost programming/services to support people through what is often the toughest time of the year in one of the most challenging years we have seen. While my private practice is in Montclair, I do know many local wellness businesses in town have suffered major losses through closure and decreased clientele. It would be great to also think of ways we can involve them as a way to keep them open and accessible when we need them the most.
