The purpose of this action is to help raise awareness of the strength of the existing assets in the community and to develop strategies to build and capitalize upon these strengths. It is also designed to demonstrate mindful, intentional and inclusive collaboration that is changing the creative culture through working with different groups and linking these activities to economic growth.
This action step provides an opportunity to build upon the momentum from the Creative Team’s engagement in conducting the Creative Assets Inventory. The assets identified in the inventory might include: local artists; a high performing Creative Team; cultural activities and events; buildings/venues; arts and community organizations, as well as parks, local historic buildings, restaurants, etc. that fit within the greater cultural context of the community.
After conducting the CAI and engaging all stakeholders, it is time to begin to fulfill the ideas put forth in the Creative Placemaking Vision by utilizing those assets and considering partnerships with various entities. They may be public and/or private partners, the municipal government, other municipalities or even schools.
Why is it important?
“Utilizing Your Creative Assets” will not only begin to help your community recognize the breadth of assets which exist in the area, but it can lead them to begin to mindfully engage with those assets. The planning and fulfillment of this exercise can often serve as a catalyst for community and local economic growth. It can serve as a bridge between other Sustainable Jersey actions and activities. It can provide far-reaching benefits and opportunities leading to social inclusion, community pride and stewardship. For example, in Orange Township, the Valley Arts District has grown to encompass numerous and diverse arts organizations, performance spaces, and presenting organizations, as well as broader cultural assets, including Garden State Urban Farms, new and interesting restaurants, newly constructed affordable housing, transit-oriented development, etc. Planning has capitalized on the rich historical assets of the town. The resultant surge in activity has engendered community pride and is beginning to mark Orange as both a destination and a vibrant area in which to live and work. Once your community begins to utilize its built, natural and organizational assets, and perhaps ties them in with its historical assets, you will see your vision begin to come to life. More possibilities will become apparent and your overall Creative Placemaking Plan will start to reveal itself.
