The "Organic Villagers at the Veterans Garden" is located at Paterson Park Apartments, the first permanent supportive housing for homeless and/or disabled veterans in the State of New Jersey. This community garden, which has been in operation for three years now, has helped transformed a challenged neighborhood and has become a role model for similar projects. The garden started with six raised beds and it has now grown to 10 beds, generating food surpluses that are donated to foods pantry in Paterson and one organization in Montclair.
Last year, with the support of the Northeast Earth Coalition (NEEC), two mature apple trees were added to the garden. This year, the NEEC is planning to add two rain barrels and a pollinators garden as well as a compost site. They will plant plant blueberry bushes and strawberries if there is enough funding.
